The Sculptor Lauritz Jensen 1859 – 1935
Lauritz Jensen was born in Viborg 1859 and passed away 1935 where he was burried in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen. After attending the technical school he studied under Vilhelm Bissen (1836-1913) and was enrolled in The Royal Academy of Copenhagen October 1877. After graduation in 1885 he was regular contributor to the Charlottenborg Art Exhibition in Copenhagen, and was an active board member of the art circles in Copenhagen at that time, which eventually made him a member of the Royal Academy Council 1909-1917.
L. Jensen became one of the best animal sculptors of his time, both in the grand format of the statue and when it comes to smaller figurines. As early as the Nordic Exhibition in 1888 he was recognized for his enormous group called: ”A Celtic man on horse fighting the Urus (ox)’. This piece and his small figurines showed both his foundation in the contemporary naturalism and his ability to grasp spirit of the animals and at the same time describe them correctly. His later works for the porcelain manufactories shows his fondness for the lion and other wild cats as his motives, with a great deal of inspiration from the French Sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (1796-1875).
